Query mode also allows you to automatically locate on a record by incremental positioning. To locate on a record, type an alpha string (for alphanumeric fields) or type a number (for numeric fields). Those fields available for incremental positioning have been painted red, to assist users identify the suitable fields. This feature is particularly useful when Zooming to a selection screen. Entering the first few characters of a code will automatically position you to enable simple selection of a table entry.

NOTE: Using Incremental Positioning.

After you have positioned to the required record, and prior to starting a new incremental positioning operation, Magic needs to be told that you have ended the current incremental positioning operation. The <F2> Cancel function, or using one of the Directional Keys, will cancel the current incremental positioning operation.

When positioning using a numeric field the caret will stay in the left most position of the field.

When positioning using an alphanumeric field the caret will position to the next character, the characters to the left of the caret being the characters entered for the positioning operation.

Magic will issue a warning beep when unable to position because the character entered is not found in the current position of the field.

As a general rule <Esc> is used to terminate data entry tasks (modify and create modes). <Enter> is used to terminate inquiry tasks (inquiry mode).

<Enter> is used to select data from a scrolling list and to return it to the calling task. If <Esc> is used to terminate a scrolling list, no data is selected and control is returned to the immediate calling task.
